Healthier Future for Wisconsin

Lakes, Rivers & Streams

Eco Spotlight : Great Lakes Explorers

https://youtu.be/V8u3cX8FaGA

It’s time to explore Wisconsin’s wetlands and learn how pollution can impact our tiniest creatures. The Great Lakes Explorers program connects kids with the world around them, giving them space to be curious, creative, passionate learners. The cornerstone of environmental protection is science & learning.

The program is a collaboration among the Great Lakes Explorers Group at Pulaski Middle School, UW Green Bay, and Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve.

📣 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 📣

  • Wisconsin has lost about half its wetlands over the last 150 years.
  • Wetlands naturally improve water quality – they absorb excess fertilizers, sediments, and pollutants before they reach larger bodies of water.
  • A third of the state’s species depend on wetlands for living and breeding.
  • Wetlands are crucial in the fight against climate change. Wetlands cover 5 to 8% of the earth, but hold upwards of 30% of soil carbon.
