Action Alert: Stop Unchecked Data Center Development

Healthier Future for Wisconsin

Data Centers

Tell the PSC to protect Wisconsin families and small businesses

We need your help to push the PSC to reject the proposed contract and require Alliant Energy to create a new rate structure that actually protects Wisconsin families and small businesses.

Massive new AI data centers are coming to Wisconsin and demanding enormous amounts of electricity and new infrastructure to serve them. Utilities and tech companies say these facilities will pay their own way, but their promise does not mean protection. That’s why Clean Wisconsin intervened in a case before the Public Service Commission (PSC) to challenge a proposed contract between Alliant Energy (Wisconsin Power and Light) and a new data center in their territory. After reviewing the case, we found serious flaws in the deal. This contract places too much risk on Alliant’s other customers: Wisconsin families and small businesses.

We need your help to push the PSC to reject the proposed contract and require Alliant Energy to create a new rate structure that actually protects Wisconsin families and small businesses.

As written, the proposed contract:

  • Doesn’t guarantee a long enough commitment to protect other customers
  • Sets minimum billing requirements that may be too low to cover Alliant’s costs
  • Includes termination fees that could fall short if the project scales back or leaves

Here’s what we’re asking the PSC to do:

  • Reject the proposed contract
  • Require Alliant to create a rate structure (known as a “large-load tariff”) that ensures data centers pThis iay the full cost of serving them and protects existing customers

Wisconsinites should not be on the hook for the massive energy and infrastructure costs required to power billion-dollar tech companies.
