Our Climate > Expanding Energy Transmission
Powering Clean Energy Transmission
A modern grid is essential to Wisconsin’s clean energy future. Right now, more than 100 solar and wind projects are waiting to connect—but without enough transmission lines, they remain stalled. Let’s build a grid that unlocks wind and solar energy, strengthens our economy, and protects Wisconsin’s future.

Overview
A Cleaner, Safer Way to Move Energy
Pipelines leak. Coal trains derail. Tanker trucks spill. Fossil fuel transport puts water, wildlife, and communities at risk. Clean energy is different. Transmission lines safely move energy from wind and solar farms to homes and businesses, reducing pollution and risk. It’s time to trade dirty infrastructure for a clean energy system that benefits everyone.

KEY INITIATIVES
Why Expanding Transmission Matters
Wisconsin needs a stronger, modern transmission system to connect more clean energy projects, ensure grid reliability, and meet our climate goals. A robust transmission network would allow Wisconsin to share clean electricity across the region—even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing locally. It’s also key to phasing out fossil fuels. Transmission lines move renewable power from generation sites to the communities that need it most, helping us build a carbon-free electricity system for the future.
Real Dollars for Local Communities
Transmission lines don’t just move energy, they deliver real investment in Wisconsin communities. State law directs transmission fees to local governments. To date, nearly $15 million in transmission fees has funded broadband, emergency services, parks, and infrastructure—especially in the rural areas that need it most.
Big Returns on Investment
Planned transmission lines in the Midwest deliver $2.60 in value for every $1 invested—by avoiding blackouts, lowering energy bills, and cutting pollution.
Essentials for Net-Zero
New modeling shows Wisconsin can’t reach net-zero by 2050 without expanding transmission. Without action, we risk $1 billion in additional annual costs plus the loss of clean energy jobs and healthier air.
Support A Clean Energy Economy
Roughly 100 solar and 100 wind projects are waiting to connect in Wisconsin. Without more lines, those projects—and the jobs and investments they bring—may never get built.
