Clean Wisconsin has a number of science and policy internships available throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate students in environmental science, agricultural science, political science, public health, or other related fields. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong analytic and technical abilities, excellent writing skills, and an interest in and commitment to addressing environmental issues facing Wisconsin.
Positions
Science associate interns will assist the organization’s science team in a variety of tasks to provide support for Clean Wisconsin’s clean air, clean energy and clean water work.
Clean Wisconsin generally offers the following positions:
- 1-2 Research Interns (Spring, Summer, Fall)
- 1 Policy & Research Fellowships (Summer)
General responsibilities for the Research Internships may include analyzing permits, applications, and other technical documents; composing technical briefings and factsheets; gathering data needed to support campaign program positions; and synthesizing information related to campaigns for internal use.
Additional responsibilities for the Science and Policy Fellowship may include performing independent secondary research and analysis relevant to campaigns; responding to information inquiries by staff, members, and others; and writing scientific whitepapers and reports.
Salary
A stipend is provided to science interns and fellows by Clean Wisconsin.
Focus Areas
The specific areas of work will be determined based on interest, expertise, and necessity, but may include:
- Energy policy analysis
- Environmental determinants of health outcomes
- Groundwater quality & contamination
- Nutrient water pollution
- Pharmaceutical and personal care waste in waterbodies
- Potential environmental impacts of mining operations
- Public health consequences of air pollution
- Regional and national climate change policy modeling
- Urban runoff effects on water and aquatic ecosystems
- Website content and development
- Nature-based climate solutions
Requirements
Research Interns are expected to possess the following:
- Completed coursework and some background knowledge in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, public health, engineering, political science or other related fields
- Strong analytic and technical abilities
- Excellent writing skills
- Interest in, and commitment to, addressing environmental issues facing Wisconsin
- Ability to commit 15 (fall/ spring), 24 (summer), or more hours a week for 12 weeks
Policy and Research Fellows are additionally expected to possess the following:
- DESIRED: Completed undergraduate degree in agricultural science, environmental sciences, political science, public health, or other related fields
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize scientific information and compose whitepapers/ reports
- Ability to commit 40 hours a week for 12 weeks
