Opposing the Northwoods Iron Mine

Clean Wisconsin was at the forefront of the fight to retain our strong mining laws. Unfortunately, in March 2013, a new bill, AB1/SB1, was signed into law that significantly weakened our mining laws by shortening the permitting process for iron mines in Wisconsin, limiting public input and relaxing environmental protections.

At present, Gogebic Taconite, owned by out-of-state mining interests, has started the process of permitting a mine in the Penokee Range of Wisconsin’s Iron and Ashland counties. We will continue to seek ways to protect Wisconsin residents and our natural resources as Gogebic Taconite moves through the permitting process.
