Help Save the Mississippi River

Tell Congress to establish a Mississippi River restoration program!

Other natural treasures like the Everglades, Puget Sound and the Great Lakes already enjoy the benefits of a dedicated federal restoration program. It is the Mississippi River’s turn.

Support the creation of a Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative (MRRRI) that directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to work closely with other federal agencies, states, tribal nations, local governments and non-governmental organizations to develop and coordinate the Initiative, with these goals:

  • Protect our drinking water by reducing runoff pollution
  • Reduce flood and storm risks and increase community resilience through ecologically sound management
  • Protect and restore wildlife habitat, in part by preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species

The non-regulatory initiative will work by establishing science-based environmental goals for the Mississippi River and providing funding for restoration projects in river states, cities, townships and tribal nations. Thirty-five percent of all grant dollars will be required to support the most at-risk communities, including communities of color and communities of low wealth.

Take action today and tell your members of Congress to make the Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative a reality!
