Climate Justice Organizer Job Opening


Clean Wisconsin seeks a motivated professional to fill a new position as our Climate Justice Organizer. This is an exciting opportunity to build power in communities across Wisconsin to advocate for bold and equitable climate solutions. The ideal candidate will have organizing experience, a familiarity with strategies to reduce our climate impact and increase resilience in Wisconsin, and established relationships with grassroots organizations. Responsibilities include outreach and dialogue with diverse communities, education and training, and elevating voices through media and events to demonstrate strong public support for addressing climate change in Wisconsin. The organizer will specifically strengthen relationships and engage in mutual learning with underserved communities disproportionately subjected to environmental harms, and work to center these voices in advocating for solutions.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Climate Solutions Director that will eventually be based at one of Clean Wisconsin’s offices (Milwaukee or Madison). Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, this position will currently be remote, with limited exceptions, until Clean Wisconsin determines it is safe for staff to return to the office. Similarly, once it is safe to travel for outreach and educational events, the Climate Justice Organizer will engage in in-person activities requiring limited travel around Wisconsin. Occasional early morning, evening, and weekend events may be required.



The organizer will implement virtual, field, and outreach strategies across Wisconsin including:

  • Relationship building
    • Engage in network, ally development, and coalition building with a wide variety of constituencies to grow broad community support for climate solutions
    • Conduct targeted outreach and ideas exchange with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and youth communities, working to center these voices in climate advocacy
    • Lead Clean Wisconsin’s ongoing Tribal Initiative, establishing and deepening relationships with Wisconsin’s eleven tribes and exploring opportunities to collaborate on issues of mutual concern such as climate change and water quality
  • Education and training
    • Give presentations and serve as a resource to grassroots activists, community leaders, and other advocacy groups to provide information and resources related to climate impacts, mitigation, and resilience in Wisconsin
  • Elevating voices, demonstrating public support, and motivating action through civic engagement and advocacy campaigns
    • Build support for timely local and state-level climate action opportunities such as: implementing recommendations from the Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change or the Milwaukee City/County Task Force on Climate and Economic Equity, and equitable climate solutions through the state budget, legislative actions, administrative actions, and city and county resolutions and initiatives
    • Recruit community members to show support for equitable climate solutions through actions like letters to the editor, meetings with decision-makers and media events.
    • Identify and employ complementary climate solutions messages for cross-cutting issues to appeal to broader audiences, including racial and social equity, public health, economics, and others
    • Work with our Communications team and Content Manager to feature community voices in our video, podcast, blog, and social media stories
    • Organize phone banks and email alerts to call members to action
  • Virtual and in-person organizing
    • For the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 situation, the organizer will predominately engage communities virtually – through virtual events, email, phone, and mail. Once safe to do so, the organizer will add in-person events and outreach.



  • Motivated and passionate about contributing to climate solutions and environmental justice in Wisconsin
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to respectfully work with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds
  • A “people person” skilled at building relationships, trust, and motivation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfort with public speaking, giving presentations, organizing and hosting events, and engaging community groups and individuals
  • A thoughtful self-starter, bringing new ideas and creativity to the tasks at hand
  • Strong organization, planning skills, and follow-through
  • Good time management skills, insight for strategic prioritization and ability to manage multiple tasks at once, and self-direction to operationalize tasks
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a team, including comfort and competency working in a remote environment
  • Virtual and in-person event planning experience
  • Basic office skills and familiarity with programs including Microsoft Office, Zoom and other virtual meeting platforms, and Google docs
  • Education, work, or volunteer experience related to climate or environmental issues



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education or work experience
  • At least one year of professional experience, with a demonstrated record of excellence and accomplishments
  • Prior organizing experience


Salary range for the full-time position is $38,000-$40,000, commensurate with skills and experience. A strong benefits package includes health and dental insurance, retirement, paid vacation and holidays.
