Protecting the Environment can be Delicious and Nutritious
Shop Whole Foods April 9th to support Clean Wisconsin's work Protecting Wisconsin's Air and Water
Madison, WI – You can stock your shelves with wholesome food and take stock in the environment by shopping at Whole Foods, 3313 University Avenue, Thursday, April 9th. The grocer will donate 5 percent of that day's total sales to Clean Wisconsin, the state's largest environmental advocacy organization.
"Protecting Wisconsin's clean air and water has never tasted so good," said Mark Redsten, executive director of Clean Wisconsin. "Shopping Whole Foods on their Spring Donation Day is a terrific and easy opportunity for residents in the Madison area to show their support of our state's environment."
Environmentally-friendly shopping need not take place only on April 9th; Wisconsin residents can show their support for the environment every day of the year by following these five tips for eco-friendly eating and shopping:
- Don't forget re-useable bags: Plastic Bags are made from petroleum, decompose slowly and pollute forests, lakes, rivers and oceans. Bringing your own canvas or cotton bag to the market is simple way to do something great for the environment. Don't have canvas or cotton bags? Keep and re-use bags given to you at the grocery store.
- Eat Local and In-Season Produce When Available: The farther food travels, the more carbon dioxide is required to get it from a farm to your table. Selecting in-season produce grown close to home is a terrific way to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Eat Lower on the Food Chain (Try Tofu): Eating primarily plant matter is a great way to drastically reduce the amount of carbon it takes to produce your food. Try serving tofu as an occasional substitute for meat at mealtimes. Your body and the environment will thank you.
- Buy Organic: Purchasing organic foods ensures that dangerous pesticides that harm birds and other animals are not used to produce your food. Shopping on a budget? Prioritize buying organic foods that when grown conventionally require the most pesticides including strawberries, apples, bell peppers, celery and spinach.
- Use Re-useable Water Bottles: Filling re-useable water bottles requires no transport, and prevents petroleum-based bottles from filling landfills. It's easy on the environment as well as your wallet.
By shopping Whole Foods April 9th and following these 5 easy tips, you can show your support for Wisconsin's environment every day of the year.
