Great Lakes Compact:
Keeping Great Lakes Water in the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes hold one fifth of the world's (and 95% of the United States') fresh surface water and provide drinking water to over 30 million people, however, there are no consistent rules across the region governing the use of water from the Great Lakes. This means that the Great Lakes water supply is vulnerable to tankers and pipelines that would pump water away from the region. The current "anything goes" status leaves our region open to water shortages and lowered lake levels.

It doesn't have to be this way. The Great Lakes Compact establishes fair and consistent rules for responsible Great Lakes water use. Clean Wisconsin is working to strengthen the Compact before the legislature to guarantee the long-term protection and sound management of Great Lakes water, ensuring that they are not sold to the highest bidder and that they are protected for generations to come.
