We Energies' Retrofit Application for Oak Creek Coal Plant
We Energies has filed an application with the Public Service Commission (PSC) for authority to spend $820 million to install pollution control equipment at Units 5,6,7, and 8 of its Oak Creek Power Plant. Clean Wisconsin is working with the Citizens Utility Board to analyze whether this project is in the best interest of Wisconsin residents, both economically and environmentally. We are working with technical experts to answer some important questions, such as:
- Has the company chosen the best solutions to clean up the old Oak Creek units?
- What additional measures will be required at Oak Creek to comply with likely future environmental regulations, such as carbon regulation and stricter mercury standards?
- Did We Energies consider alternatives to retrofitting these old coal units, such as investing this huge sum in energy efficiency or renewable energy?
- What is the forecast for electricity demand over the life of this plant: are these old units needed?
These and other questions will be addressed in Clean Wisconsin's case at the PSC.
