Cleaning up dirty, old coal plants
Pushing to retire, or clean-up, old coal plants
Wisconsin currently generates more than 70% of its electricity from old coal plants, some dating back to the 1940s. Soot, smog and mercury are the biggest threats from dirty coal-fired power plants. Smog triggers asthma attacks and permanently limits children's lung capacity. We can do better. The State Energy Priority Law lists coal dead last as an option for meeting Wisconsin's energy needs. The technology is available to clean up the air and protect public health.
Clean Wisconsin is working hard to obtain commitments from utilities to retire or retrofit coal-fired power plants with modern pollution controls to reduce toxic or polluting air emissions; our goal is to retire or retrofit all uncontrolled coal-fired power plants in Wisconsin with modern pollution controls.
