Instead of taking advantage of Wisconsin's abundance of
natural resources to provide clean, safe and affordable renewable
energy for Wisconsin, Alliant Energy has proposed to build
another outdated, coal plant in Cassville, WI that will be
using the dirtiest technology available. What's
worse is this is at the expense of Wisconsin ratepayers.
Why should Wisconsin ratepayers foot the bill for Alliant's
bad business decisions?
This is a bad investment for Wisconsin:
- Alliant's proposed coal
plant would use the dirtiest technology available,
causing it to spew nearly 3,000,000 tons
of global warming pollution in to the atmosphere every year.
That would be the equivalent of adding nearly 635,000 cars
to Wisconsin's roads. Wisconsin should be reducing global
warming pollution, not increasing it!
- Future global warming
regulations will require utilities to pay for their global
warming pollution; this will make Alliant's proposed coal
plant especially expensive to run because they have chosen
to use a technology that has higher rates of global warming pollution than
any other coal plants.
- Alliant Energy is proposing
to spend more than $950 million dollars of its customers'
money to build another polluting coal plant that will be
outdated the day it begins operation. This money should
be used to promote renewable energy sources like solar,
wind and biofuels instead of buying more dirty coal.
- Wisconsin is already
overly dependent on coal fired power plants. Nearly 75%
of our electricity comes from coal plants, the largest
sources of toxic mercury, soot, smog and global warming
pollution. Building
another coal plant will only make these problems worse.
I support a clean, safe, and affordable energy future
for the state of Wisconsin. Home-grown energy
solutions such as solar, wind and bio-fuels are readily
available to provide clean energy for our state and build
our economy. Alliant's application to build another coal-fired
power plant flies in the face of Governor Doyle's efforts
to reduce Wisconsin's global warming footprint and locks
us into decades of increased pollution. I urge
the Public Service Commission to deny Alliant's request
to build another out-dated, coal-fired power plant and I
support Clean Wisconsin's efforts to promote cleaner, more
efficient and less expensive alternatives.
